Since 1996, LaCroy chemical facilities have been operating in Cape Town, South Africa — producers of well-known pheromone brands such as NPA, The Edge, and BTB. At the special request of Pheromones.eu, a film crew was granted access to laboratories that are usually closed to visitors. The Pheromone Manufacturing Process
One of the greatest challenges for chemists is isolating pheromones from other substances—a time-consuming and multi-step process that determines the quality of the final product. During distillation in rotary evaporators, the solvent is separated first, followed by alcohol. The alcohol is condensed and then the pheromones undergo further distillation, leading to crystallization.
The final stage—filtration—is crucial for ensuring high pheromone purity. Higher purity not only increases effectiveness in attracting the opposite sex but also reduces the specific scent of raw pheromones, improving comfort during use.
The resulting pheromones take the form of microcrystals resembling a fine powder. Synthesizing just one gram of high-purity pheromones (over 99%) takes about one week.
Individual pheromones—such as Androstenol or Androstadienone—are blended in specific proportions to create customer-favorite products. These precise ratios determine the pheromones’ effectiveness. The exact composition is a closely guarded trade secret, and the formula is continuously refined.
Once the process is complete, the product is ready. Bottles are filled, and the globally renowned The Edge is ready for customers.
Each bottle undergoes strict quality control using a GC-MS mass spectrometer, ensuring every product meets the manufacturer’s guaranteed purity and concentration standards.
