“Do you see a woman or a man?” – this was the question posed during a scientific study at Peking University. Professor Wen Zhou showed participants human figures outlined with 15 dots (like the ones you see in the animation above). The figures moved to imitate walking, and the participants had to determine whether they perceived the figure as male or female. Naturally, only one figure was shown at a time.

At first glance, all the silhouettes appear identical. However, notice that when you focus on the figure on the left, you recognize a woman’s walk. In contrast, when you focus on the figure on the right, you see a man’s gait. The closer to the center, the more the silhouettes lose both masculine and feminine traits — the difference between genders fades. These are subtle variations in the way we move our bodies, and yet, clearly — you recognize either a man or a woman.

What happened when participants, just like you now, were asked to watch the above animation while smelling human pheromones?
It may seem unbelievable, but just a few drops of Androstadienone and Estratetraenol radically changed people’s perception of the “masculinity” and “femininity” of the silhouettes! Men exposed to Estratetraenol (a female pheromone) were more likely to perceive the same silhouette as a woman than those who smelled a placebo (a control scent without pheromones). Pheromones made women appear more feminine in the eyes of men.

Likewise with Androstadienone. Under its influence, women judged the same silhouettes to be more masculine. Their minds looked for masculine traits in otherwise neutral figures.

Scientists were surprised to discover that “We recognize gender with our noses.” The sense of smell, which detects sexual pheromones, plays a significant role in our perception of “masculinity” and “femininity.” What’s more, this effect is subconscious. It turns out that pheromone sprays do affect people and alter gender perception. This was the first scientific study to show that human pheromones actually exist — and influence others.

What does this mean?
